When you really stop and think about it, every teacher is a futurist.
They don't just teach subjects — they shape confidence, spark curiosity, and influence the future through the students sitting in front of them every day.
As I reflected on this recently, I realized just how many teachers left fingerprints on my own life.
I still remember my first-grade teacher, Ms. Otti, for her kindness. Mr. Carroll made me feel smart in math when I wasn't sure I was. Ms. Bonner somehow made dissecting a frog fascinating, Ms. Duncan inspired me to read more, and every time I write the word it, I still hear Ms. Wilson saying, "Kevin...define what 'it' is."
Funny how those moments stay with us.
But one teacher, in particular, changed the trajectory of my life.
One passing comment. One turning point.
Ms. Adams was my English 101 professor in college. After reading an essay I wrote about being on The Price Is Right, she looked at me and simply said, "Kevin, you're a really good writer."
To her, it may have been a passing comment.
To me, it became a turning point.
Her belief in me helped me believe in myself. Years later, that encouragement led me to write my first book... and eventually several more.
Seventeen years later, I tracked her down just to say thank you. I wasn't sure she'd even remember me.
She did.
She replied, "I remember you. Your paper is still the best paper I ever read because it reminded me of my passion for teaching. So thank you, Kevin."
What a beautiful reminder that influence works both ways.
That experience taught me something I'll never forget: most teachers, parents, coaches, leaders, and mentors never fully realize the impact they have. A kind word, a moment of encouragement, or believing in someone before they believe in themselves can change the course of a life.
The same is true for all of us.
Whether you're leading a team, raising children, coaching, teaching, or simply investing in the people around you, never underestimate the power of your words. You may never know which conversation gives someone the confidence to pursue a dream.
My challenge for you
Think about someone who believed in you before you fully believed in yourself. If you have the opportunity, reach out and thank them. Your words of appreciation may encourage them just as much as their words once encouraged you.
One of the greatest lessons I've learned is that our influence is often much bigger than we realize.
After all, the most influential people often never know it.
